What is LGD?
Introduction
What is a LGD? This term encompasses many different dog breeds including mutts! It refers to a job. These dogs work for a living. They protect animals, people, and property. Most of them live exclusively outside.

LGD
LGD is short for livestock guardian dog. I have heard this used loosely for many dogs, but I think they are more than your typical farm dog! These dogs are devoted to their herd and used for protection. They work 24/7. They are the eyes and ears when no one is home.

Traits
Livestock guardian dogs usually have intelligent, stubborn, strong, independent, loyal, loving, and protective personalities. They need these characteristics to make decisions while alone with their herd. Their ability to withstand cold and hot temperatures is truly amazing. True grit is what I think of when someone talks about their LGD.

Fencing
These dogs need good fences and plenty of room. Most breeders recommend electric hotwires on top and bottom to keep them in. Some people use electric netting fence but there are some major considerations when using it (click here for some common electric netting fence issues). And if they don’t have a job, they’ll try and break out even more.

Training
Many times, they need years of training before they are ready to live with their charges. Training starts at puppyhood and must remain consistent until they are mature enough to resist the urge to chase and play with livestock.

Could you use a LGD at your house? Can you commit to years of training?
