Should I Use a Harness on My Anatolian Shepherd?
Introduction
Why or why not use a harness for my Anatolian Shepherd? Harness can have different uses. Often, harnesses are used for general walking or just taking the dog to the vet. Let’s explore some things to consider with dog harnesses.
Sometimes a harness it is viewed as “nicer” to the dog. Generally, they are not directly on the neck. There are “No Pull Harnesses”.

Medically Necessary
Veterinarians will often recommend a harness for dogs with neck injuries or eye issues/conditions. Geriatric dogs can benefit from their support: in and out of the car; navigating steps, etc.
Working Dogs
- Carrying
- Pulling
- Providing a Handle
- Displaying a Service Badge
- Protection
But, would a harness be good for my working livestock guardian dog? Bear are the largest nuisance animal in our area. Coyote packs can be heard from our front door. Foxes, racoons, opossums, skunks, are the most common issues for me.

Harness Drawbacks
In reality you can’t leave harnesses on all the time. Harnesses have more area to get caught if the dog is outside. Some dogs can pull out of a harness while others cannot. Some dogs like to chew out of them. They can rub and be uncomfortable.
When I think “harness”, I think of distribution of weight. They’re easy to pull with. On a normal day I don’t want to give my 150 lb Anatolian Shepherd a tool that says “Pull Me!” I wouldn’t want to give my 45 lb Dalmatian more leverage.

Conclusion
Harnesses can be effectively used for working dogs. However, for me and my livestock guardians, they don’t serve enough of a purpose.
